Title: Mountains the Dramatic  Landform                                                   Subject/Course: Earth Science

Topic: Earth Science                        Grade: 5                                                    Designer: Marilyn Baker

Stage 1- Desired Results
·         Established Goals: I want students to leave this lesson understanding the cause and effects of plate tectonics formation of mountains and describe two ways that mountains can form at convergent plate boundaries.
Understanding:
·         Landforms consist of: mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys, hills, and glaciers too
·         Plate tonics can collide
·         Natural forces cause different types of rocks to shift and move

Essential Questions:
·         How could marine like fossils reach the top of Mount Everest?
·         What are mountains?
·         What are the effects when are mountains formed?
·         What do mountains tell us about the dynamic behavior of earth?
Students will Know:
·         Mountain formations are a result of forces of erosion, volcanism or shifts in earth surface
·         When rocks are formed they become mountains
·         Rocks have layers that are horizontal
Students will be able to
·         Reflect on different causes of mountain formation and what caused them
·         Solve the mystery of how fossils from the bottom of the ocean reached the tallest mountain in the world.
·         Explain how layered rocks are formed and they are sedimentary  and broken down

              Assessment                                                Stage - 2
Evidence
Performance Tasks:
·         3 Way Summaries-write informative text using different modes of thinking and attention to details to a question or the topic inquiry. Then write three different summaries. The student must use vocabulary domain words in responses.
Other Evidence:
·         Round Robin-in groups, pass pictures of large rocks and share knowledge by answering open-ended questions.
·         3-2-1 Count Down
3 things you didn’t know before the topic
2 things that surprised you
1 thing you will start doing with what you learned

                                                                Stage 3- Learning Plan

Standards:
RST.11-12.7: evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., quantitative data, video, multimedia) in order to address a question or solve a problem.”
 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.3
Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.
W= Opening, the teacher will peak students prior knowledge about landforms, and let them know where the lesson is going followed by essential questions
H= Students will  watch Earth Space & Science this video http://www.learner.org/courses/essential/earthspace/session5/index.html  vocabulary words visible- convergent plate boundaries, formation, collide
E= Pair share, student will discuss different ways forces of nature can change a landform and write on newsprint.
R= Can use  3.2.1 Count Down to assess themselves
E= Students will be given the opportunity to evaluate each other’s work
T= Student will have a choice to draw a picture(s) or use clay
O= by constructing a model with what could have made a rock surface change its physical features and become a mountain teacher observes well student maximizes initial and sustained engagement as well as effective learning
Assessment: (formal & Informal) students in detail what two ways convergent boundaries are formed. Using either a drawing with horizontal lines to show rock formation or play doe. Red Robin/3.2.1 Count Down/

Comments

  1. Excellent Backwards Design Marilyn, I like how you incorporated the video into the lesson so as to give students that visual understanding.
